Carex obnupta is a native grass relative usually found growing in wetlands and is well suited to wet areas in the garden such as a rain garden, pond or simply a low area where water collects. While it prefers wet soil it is drought tolerant once established. It will add texture to the garden with its evergreen grassy clumps and the drooping seed heads bring additional visual interest and food for native birds. Like most native grasses this plant will readily self-seed in the right conditions as well as spread via rhizomes so some weeding and size maintenance may be required. This plant is best in areas where it has some room to spread and naturalize. Allowing soil to dry out in the summer will help to limit its spread.
