Pacific Ninebark is a vase-shaped flowering shrub native to the West Coast of North America. Very common in Western Oregon Physocarpus capitatus is typically found in wet areas such as along the edges of streams and lakes. Useful in the garden with its decorative exfoliating bark and currant-like palmate leaves as well as hemisphere shaped clusters of small white flowers in late spring/early summer. The flowers are pollinated mostly by native bees but may also attract butterflies and other pollinators. While it grows in wet areas in the wild it is adaptable in the garden and drought tolerant once established, though it will appreciate an occasional deep soak in the summer.
