Eriogonum compositum is an uncommon wildflower with small populations scattered throughout most inland regions of Oregon. In the Willamette Valley it is exceptionally rare, occurring only at a few sites in the Oregon City area where development was not possible and invasive species have not yet overtaken it. In the wild it is often growing on rock outcroppings where soil is shallow, hot and dry so this is a tough plant that can handle neglect! Creamy white clusters of flowers form an umbel shape above low growing silver arrow shaped leaves. Flowers provide nectar for many types of bees and butterflies in late spring/early summer and buckwheats are a larval host plant for many butterfly species. If you have a well drained sunny spot in your garden this plant is a great choice for beautiful blooms while also conserving a rare plant and its pollinators.
