Juncus effusus is a native wetland plant and as its name implies it is very common, not only in North America but also throughout much of the world. Rushes are grass relatives found in wet habitats and many including Common Rush are tolerant of standing water. For this reason we use it regularly in rain gardens in our design work. Despite its affinity to water it is also adaptable to drought once established making it very versatile and useful in seasonally wet areas. Will self-seed and spread if not maintained but seedlings are easy to remove when young with the right weeding tools (ie. a hula hoe).
