Spirea lucidia is a small native shrub referred to commonly as Shinyleaf Spirea or sometimes as Birchleaf spirea which is a closely related Asian species. Shinyleaf spiraea in our opinion is way underused in local gardens. Unlike most of our other native shrubs which can get quite large, this one can easily be maintained as a 3'x 3' shrub in smaller urban yards or will get a little larger if left to grow wild. This is a very tame and well behaved plant which rarely sets seed (something many natives are notorious for) making it suitable for both naturescaping and more traditional landscape plantings. In late spring it will be covered with flat (umbel shaped) clusters of white flowers that native bees will love and will also attract other pollinators such as butterflies. In the Fall this deciduous shrub has fantastic fall color when planted in full sun with leaves turning shades of red, orange and yellow. You can't go wrong with Spiraea lucida.
